Letting a domestic worker's residence visa expire — even unintentionally — has immediate financial and legal consequences for the sponsor. Here's exactly what happens and what to do.
The Fine: AED 50 Per Day, No Cap
⚠️ Avoid AED 50/day fines
- AED 50 per day for residence visa overstay
- No maximum cap — fines accumulate indefinitely
1 month overstay = AED 1,500 · 6 months = AED 9,000. Calculate the exact fine →
Legal Consequences for the Sponsor
Under UAE immigration law, the sponsor (kafeel) is legally responsible for the worker's residency status. Consequences can include:
- Daily overstay fines accumulating on the sponsor's record
- Difficulty obtaining future domestic worker visas
- Worker may be detained or deported if status is flagged at official checkpoints
- Worker cannot leave the country legally until fines are paid and status resolved
How to Regularise an Expired Visa
Stop the fine clock immediately
Visit GDRFA Dubai or AMER center to start the renewal or cancellation process. The clock stops once a case is opened.
Pay outstanding fines
Fines can be paid at GDRFA, AMER centers, or online via the ICA portal. You cannot renew until fines are settled.
Renew or cancel the visa
If continuing employment: renew the residence visa. If ending: cancel the visa to trigger the exit process.
Update Emirates ID
Once residence visa is renewed, the Emirates ID must also be renewed via ICP if it has expired.
How to Prevent This From Happening
The residence visa validity date is printed on the visa sticker in the passport. However, managing this manually across a family with multiple domestic staff is where sponsors typically fall behind.
