Since the implementation of Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022 on Domestic Workers, providing medical insurance is a legal obligation for sponsors in the UAE — not optional. Here's what you need to know.
What the Law Requires
What's Covered (Minimum Requirements)
Basic plans approved by DHA (Dubai) or DOH (Abu Dhabi) for domestic workers typically cover:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Outpatient consultations (basic)
- Hospitalisation
- Diagnostics and lab tests
- Pharmacy (limited)
Cost in 2026
| Plan Type | Annual Premium (AED) |
|---|---|
| Basic (DHA Essential Benefits Plan) | 600 – 800 |
| Standard (broader coverage) | 900 – 1,500 |
| Enhanced (dental, optical, maternity) | 1,500 – 3,000+ |
Where to Buy
Insurance for domestic workers can be purchased from any DHA/DOH-approved insurer. Common options in the UAE include DAMAN, AXA, Oman Insurance, Takaful Emarat and others. You can also purchase through typing centres and AMER centres during the visa process.
What Happens If Insurance Lapses?
⚠️ Visa Renewal Blocked
If the medical insurance expires, the residence visa renewal application will be rejected. The worker's status becomes irregular, and fines may apply. Track insurance expiry the same way you track visa expiry.
Requirements may vary by emirate. Verify with MoHRE, DHA, or DOH.
